Dom Alexandre, the first Catholic cardinal in Mozambique, died

Died this Tuesday, 29, at the age of 103, in Maputo, the first Catholic priest and cardinal of Mozambique, Dom Alexandre José Maria dos Santos.

Born in Zavala, province of Inhambane, Alexandre José Maria dos Santos was ordained a priest in 1953, becoming the first black Mozambican in the position.

In 1988, he was appointed Cardinal-Priest of San Frumenzio ai Prati Fiscali by Pope John Paul II, also first.

Between 1975-2003 he was Archbishop of Maputo. After resigning in 2003, he became archbishop emeritus of Maputo.

The religious bet on education, an example being the creation of the São Tomás University of Mozambique.

Dom Alexandre participated in the pacification processes, with emphasis on what determined the end of the civil war in 1992.
